Design Build Legal is a one-person consulting shop, but we work with firms in lots of ways, including partnering with other consultancies or with technology vendors to help you get things done

Outside Consultant

Much of our work is done on a project-by-project basis, either hourly or on a fixed fee for a certain result. Firms will bring us in when they have a specific challenge, but they don’t feel like they have manpower or skills to tackle it; because they know we work with technologies they have or are interested in; or when they have one or more projects that they know they’ll put off until next year without an extra set of hands.

We have a couple of law firms for which we do act essentially as a team member: we have a firm email address and/or a firm laptop, we split projects up with in-house team members; and we have a general monthly target for hours and billings that we manage to. We don’t make a secret that we’re an outside person, but we fit seamlessly into the existing team.

Monthly Subscription

We’ve worked with nearly a dozen firms that wanted to create an “innovation” effort, but either didn’t know where to start, or didn’t feel like they could take people out of their daily work. We help to develop a strategy for innovation, to extract ideas from clients, lawyers and staff; to evaluate those ideas; and to execute on the best ones. Over time, having proven the concept with us, firms will often build out their own teams, at which time we shift to a more targeted role, or move on completely.

We have been engaged by larger consultancies for our experience in a certain market or type of law, or as an extra set of hands. We also have other consultants we can lean on for overflow work, and we will make referrals when necessary to our peers in areas where they are better suited. And we partner with a number of technology vendors who bring us in to help new customers get off the ground, or existing customers to get more from their technology spend.
